The aim of the course is to give a deeper understanding of how the change in concepts about city planning, building technology, materials, infrastructure, and the used materials, can induce technical, economical and social change towards sustainability of urban systems.
At the end of the course the student should
- understand the role of urban centers and the interaction with the rural system
- view the city as an integrated system
- understand the historical development and present trends in city planning
- be able to critically evaluate the interactions between built systems and social systems, and the connections between technology and local traditions, habits and culture.
- be able to analyse important factors influencing an urban setting and to apply these on specific cases
- understand which factors influence strategies and choices in long-term urban planning
- be able to analyse planning documents as well as scientific articles within the field of urban systems and sustainability
- be able to communicate with scholars of different disciplines and with professionals and laymen on issues regarding urban systems and sustainability.
