Earth Systems Science

MESB02, 7.5 credits

This foundational course focuses on the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the global Earth system as they relate to sustainability challenges and intersections with society.

The course includes a strong focus on developing graduate-level academic writing skills, including small group peer-review sessions for the course assignment. These elements are combined to culminate in a scientific term paper.

The course format includes lectures, seminars and exercises, group work and out of classroom activities during a three-day, two-night excursion in the southern Swedish region of Skåne.

An emphasis is also placed on effective communication, leadership, and group dynamics in a multicultural setting, laying the foundation for collaborative learning projects throughout the LUMES program.

I found the content and scope of the course absolutely fantastic - ESS is a great starting point for us as we engage in sustainability research.
